This is not only because of the level of authority that comes with occupying the position of a CEO but also with the responsibilities that come along with occupying it.
There is certain information that should be readily presented on a CEO resume and there are some that should be filtered out.
In this article, I will show you what a CEO resume is, the responsibilities of a CEO, skills to put in your CEO resume, and how to write a CEO resume.
A CEO resume is a professional resume written when one is seeking to occupy the position of top executives such as the president of a company, the CEO of a company, etc.
The CEO’s resume should be one that displays authority and power. You wouldn’t want to construct or draft a CEO resume the same way you draft a data analyst resume.
Your CEO’s resume should be strong and professional enough to sail through the applicant tracking system (ATS). Once this is done, your interview is guaranteed.
Before we dive deep, I will love to give a definition of who a CEO is, the roles and responsibilities of a CEO.
Who Is a C.E.O?
A CEO is an acronym that stands for Chief Executive Officer. This is the topmost executive of an organization or the highest-ranking individual in an organization.
The responsibilities of a CEO include:
- Taking major decisions in the company
- Overseeing all the operation and resources of a company
- Reviewing the financial and non-financial report
- Developing high-quality business strategies and plans
- Training, motivating, and leading others
- Information risk management
- Inventing and establishing IT policies, strategies, and standards
Having established this, let’s proceed to the next tips on our list which is what to include in your CEO resume.
What to Include in your CEO Resume
Below are a few tips that will guide you in creating a resume that will not only par with other applicants’ resumes; if applied it will successfully present your capabilities for the executive position to the recruitment manager.
1. Your contact information
The first thing that should appear on your resume is your contact information as this gives the recruitment manager a clue about who you are and what country or state you are applying from.
Your contact information should be in the resume heading area, it should be written in bold text and large font and your resume should also follow the chronological order format for writing resumes.

2. Include a Professional CEO Resume Summary
Your professional resume objective is also known as a profile statement that comes immediately after your contact information.
It should present a piece of brief information about you and your executive skills to the board of directors or the recruitment manager.
This statement should be short, concise, and precise, as the recruitment manager or board of directors won’t spend much time reading your resume.
This is because there is too much competition out there, and a lot of persons are striving to occupy that same position, so the best favor you can render to yourself is to put in your best effort writing your career summary.
As a matter of fact, your summary is the first content on your resume that will catch the hiring manager’s attention, so I will advise you to write your professional summary after you have filled out the necessary details on your resume.
This will make the compilation of the details you want to put in there easy as you would have thought about them.
Your objective should include experiences, management, and leadership skills tailored to the job description. It should be what I term JOB-SPECIFIC.
The first statement on your resume should be focused on introducing yourself followed by your years of work experience, areas of strength and abilities, the position you wish to occupy, etc.
I have provided an example below:
Highly accomplished Chief Executive Officer offering demonstrated experience in both domestic and international operations, multi-channel product distribution, P&L oversight, and marketing encompassing both start-up and growth organizations; a resourceful and decisive leader with proven success in new market penetration and strategic positioning for multimillion-dollar computer organizations; Progressively increases sales and grow bottom line while spearheading operational improvement to facilitate productivity and slash costs; Thrive in dynamic, demanding and deadline-driven environments while remaining focused and pragmatic.
3. Include a perfect job description for a CEO resume
This is where proficiency is needed because you need to include your previous work experience.
This tells more about how well you are fit for the job. Hence, you wouldn’t want to bug it with unnecessary details.
To write professional job description on your CEO resume, follow the procedures below:
- Start this section with your recent or most current job, followed by the one before, the idea is that your work experience should follow a chronological order
- Place the title of the position you held on top of each entry
- Followed by the dates you started and ended the job and lastly, the name of the company
- Make use of bullet points in outlining your executive and managerial skills
To achieve conciseness in outlining your executive and managerial experience, adopt the use of numbers and percentages to quantify the weight of responsibilities carried out and always make use of the following phrasal verbs:
4. Highlight professional skills tailored to the job of a CEO
Your skills should portray leadership and professionalism. Avoid the use of generic CEO skills in your resume and adopt the use of specific skills and abilities listed in the job requirement.
This increases your chances of getting beyond the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) and getting noticed by an employer.
5. Add your academic qualifications
Start with your highest degree, institution name, and qualification and let your other degrees follow the same format.
Please do not make the mistake of including your high school degree on a CEO resume.
The only reason why you can include that is if you have not completed college. High school degrees are automatically assumed for executive-level positions.
6. Add other sections to your resume
If you have followed the tips I have provided above to this level, your CEO resume is readily fit for use but to stand out amongst all other candidates (their resume won’t be too different from yours because they will include their profile statement, academic qualifications, skills, and work experience), you have to do what others won’t do – add other sections to your resume.

- Language proficiency
- Volunteer experience
- Awards and accomplishment
- Resume certifications
7. Attach a cover letter to your CEO resume
Resumes aren’t enough when applying for executive jobs. It is advisable you attach a cover letter to your resume because your cover letter is as important as your resume.
Ensure you include a catchy content in your introduction, elaborate more on your skills, previous work experience as an executive, your achievement, accomplishment, and conclude your cover letter with a compelling statement.

As you draft your resume, always follow the basic rules guiding resume writing which includes:
Your contact information must be valid and professional.
Follow the chronological format in writing your work experiences and professional qualifications
Do not put your high school degree in the academic qualification of your resume if you are applying for the job of a CEO
